Media Production

I've learned so much from my journey in media production. From filming documentaries and short films to producing scripts and crafting stories, each step has been incredible. I couldn't have done it without my amazing production team on some projects and my teachers who guided me and taught me valuable techniques. Their support and expertise were essential in helping me develop my skills and achieve success in media production.

A Story Of Enduring Passion

Short Film Proposal

For my TV Production (TVP) module, I created a Creative Short Film Proposal for a 3-5 minute TV fiction piece. The proposal includes a well-crafted script, a concise logline, and a detailed synopsis, along with visual concepts and character profiles. This task allowed me to apply my creative skills and storytelling techniques, making the process both challenging and rewarding. It was an exciting opportunity to explore the world of TV fiction writing and produce a comprehensive and engaging proposal.

Proposal

Film Title:

A Mother’s Love

Logline:
Sarah, a single mother, tries to push her son Bryan to fit in with her standards by enrolling him in various classes and competitions without considering his feelings. Bryan's discomfort culminates in a meltdown at a storytelling competition. Sarah realises her mistake and reconciles with Bryan, accepting him for who he is.

Synopsis:

Sarah, a single mom, watches a sad movie with her son Bryan, who seems detached. Flashbacks of Sarah’s past haunt her. She tries to enforce her rules on Bryan, pushing him into classes and competitions. Bryan reluctantly participates in a storytelling contest but suffers a meltdown due to the audience reactions. Sarah feels guilty and realises her mistake. Bryan withdraws, prompting Sarah's reflection on her actions. She offers peace, but Bryan initially rejects it. Eventually, Bryan accepts, and Sarah apologises, promising to embrace his uniqueness.

Summary of the Topic:

The film ‘A Mother's Love’ illustrates how a mother's love can be harmful if expressed incorrectly. In the film, a mother becomes obsessed with making her child 'perfect' to avoid societal judgement, believing this is best for the child. However, this pressure gradually overwhelms the child, leading to an unfortunate incident. As a part-time teacher with two years of experience working with children in tuition centres and as a substitute teacher in schools, I have witnessed parents push their children too hard, even when advised that the child is a slow learner. Some parents are harsh and force their children into numerous activities, which can overwhelm them and lead to depression. This pressure can result in bullying, isolation from peers, and harsh punishment from teachers who do not understand how to support these children.

This short film serves as a powerful reminder for parents to embrace their children's uniqueness. It explores the risks of having high expectations and emphasises the difficulties experienced by slow learners, which makes the movie more approachable and relatable. I want to encourage parents to provide a space where their kids can be themselves and unwind without worrying about what others think.

Principle / Main Character:

Sarah (38) - Sarah is a 38 year old strict single mother who is determined to shape her son, Bryan, into what she believes is the perfect child. Haunted by her strict upbringing, Sarah enforces strict rules like her mother and pushes Bryan into many classes and competitions, ignoring his feelings. She believes society will only accept Bryan if he meets her high standards and does as she says. This leads to a crucial moment when Bryan has a public meltdown at a storytelling competition, making Sarah realise the harmful impact of her actions. Filled with guilt, Sarah thinks about her behaviour and tries to make up with Bryan. She offers him peace and apologises, promising to accept and support his unique personality. Sarah's journey highlights the change from a stoic and controlling parent to one who understands and values her child's true self.

Bryan (12)  - Bryan is a 12-year-old boy who struggles with the expectations placed on him by his mother, Sarah. He is born autistic. Naturally a slow learner, Bryan feels overwhelmed by the many classes and competitions his mother signs him up for, all in an attempt to make him her idea of the perfect child. Bryan tries to meet his mother's demands despite his discomfort and resistance, leading to an emotional breakdown at a storytelling competition. This public meltdown shows his immense pressure and how his mother doesn't understand him. As Bryan withdraws, shutting out the world and his mother, he feels frustration, sadness, and a longing for acceptance. After her sincere apology and promise to accept his uniqueness, his path to making up with Sarah marks an essential step towards his emotional healing and self-acceptance.

Suzan (68) - Sarah's mother, Suzan, is a 68-year-old strict and demanding figure who shaped Sarah's childhood with harsh discipline and high expectations. Determined to mould Sarah into an ideal child, she enforced strict rules on her daughter. She also prioritised academic and social success as she believed perfection was the key to societal acceptance and success.
